Organizational Description:

The mission of Women Building Up (WBU) is to advance gender, racial, and social justice by supporting women, girls, and gender-expansive people whom carceral systems have directly impacted. We support them in claiming their power and becoming agents of transformative change in their communities and the world.

WBU is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded by a committee of 50 women (cis, trans, nonbinary, and gender expansive), many of whom experienced incarceration, and all of whom are courageous leaders, activists, and passionate visionaries contributing to the growth of larger grassroots movements that advance justice for women. WBU owns and operates its building in Brooklyn, NY. WBU recognizes that people directly impacted by systems of incarceration bring invaluable perspectives and skills. Position Summary:

 

Reporting to and partnering with the Executive Director, the Managing Director of Grants and Resource Mobilization (MDG) is a key member of Women Building Up’s Leadership Team. The MDG will lead, collaborate, innovate, and provide strategic direction and oversight of WBU’s activities to provide financial and non-financial resources to grassroots efforts that are aligned with WBU’s mission. The MDG will ensure WBU is represented in philanthropic communities and conversations and support the Executive Director in donor cultivation and organizing. The MDG will also oversee all grants administration vendors and partners.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Grantee Identification, Support, & Program Implementation

  • Build and tend to relationships with current and potential grantees relevant to WBU's priorities, continuously learning and understanding needs and trends, and building spaces of opportunity and coalition to advance WBU strategies and impact.
  • Collaboratively implement program strategies and support grantees in defined areas and priorities of WBU.
  • Oversee the grantmaking process, including inviting grant proposals from selected organizations, working with applicants to develop and finalize proposals, reviewing and analyzing proposals and financial and organizational capacity, and preparing write-ups.

Resource Mobilization

  • Ensure that grantees are able to access WBU resources, not just limited to grant funds, and are able to partner with WBU in its efforts to improve the economic, physical, and mental wellbeing of women, girls, and gender-expansive people who have been directly impacted by carceral systems.
  • Based on a keen understanding of the challenges and needs facing grassroots efforts that are aligned with WBU’s mission, including but not limited to WBU grantees, the MDG will seek out, vet, and connect resource providers that build grassroots’ capacity and ability to resource their work.
  • Support the Executive Director in fundraising activities to bring in co-funders to augment WBU’s grants budget and impact. 

Team Collaboration

  • Ensure collaboration and shared learning between and among WBU's grantees, partners, and staff and always foster a healthy and effective team culture.
  • Partner with WBU’s Leadership and external partners to devise a strategy for measuring and communicating impact. 
  • Prepare materials for meetings and convenings.

The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with reasonable accommodation.

Location:

This is a hybrid position. The MDG must be present in the Brooklyn office 3 days a week, and may work remotely 2 days a week, subject to the needs of their primary work responsibilities and commitments. The MDG should also be able to travel to visit grantees, represent WBU in philanthropic conveneings, and marshal additional resources to support WBU and its partners. 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Minimum of ten (10) years’ relevant experience working in the social justice sector on issues related to gender, racial, and economic justice with an understanding and familiarity of the intersectional nature of these areas. 
  • Commitment to social, gender, racial, and economic justice and to upholding those commitments in an approach to grantmaking relationships.
  • Experience in organizing, power building, or other systems change strategies related to WBU's mission and values.
  • Experience reviewing nonprofit program and organizational budgets and financial statements.
  • Previous grantmaking or resource mobilization experience is very helpful but not required.
  • Proven experience independently managing a high volume of details.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.

  • Proven ability to implement program strategies, review the feasibility and value of proposed programs, and assess organizational capacity.
  • Experience building strategic convening or coalition spaces.
  • Ability to analyze situations objectively based on available information, formulate and evaluate possible courses of action, and offer recommendations.

Relationship Building & Communication

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to summarize and present information to various audiences, including WBU's philanthropic partners.
  • Curious and learning-oriented.
  • Enjoy working in both a collaborative environment and independently.

Collaboration & Teamwork

  • The proven ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt in a changing environment.
  • Comfortable with administrative tasks and working with small teams.
  • Proficient with Google Suite (including tools for email, word, spreadsheets, and powerpoint), and able to learn other programs to support the work.

Compensation and Benefits:

Salary Range: $156,000 - $185,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
